Workers say cell tower sites putting them at risk

Workers say cell tower sites putting them at risk

San Diego – The more we rely on smart phones, the more data we want and the more antennas we need.

Workers say they are getting injured working on these antennas. They say the constant push for more towers is putting them at risk.

Team10 talked to a San Diego company that came up with a solution to keep these people safe.

The Worker

Benjamin Rivas worked on cell phone towers for 14 years.

“I was dealing with them day in and day out–climbing the towers, on the rooftops,” Rivas said.

He left the business after an antenna that should have been powered down was still live.

“It physically burned my hand. You’ll get burned on the outside but internally it blisters.”

The burn is a work injury you can see. Other problems he said caused by the towers are not as easy to spot.

“Depression, I get headaches, mood swings,” Rivas said. “Things I’ve never gotten before.”

Rivas is one of the 250,000 workers that the insurance rating agency AM Best said gets too close to these antennas. They act as an open microwave and can cause eye damage, sterility and cognitive damages.

There are 600,000 cell towers in the United States with thousands more on the way. Sprint just announced installation of 20,000 more towers.

The Problem

Drew Fountain co-founded San Diego-based RF Check. The company tracks where every tower is located in the United States. Fountain showed the RF frequencies coming from several tower sites all over San Diego using a ,000 meter.

“I’m going to show you the invisible footprints of these potentially hazardous areas that these workers don’t see,” Fountain said.

Fountain said an RF frequency over 20 percent is over the allowable limit by the FCC. He showed Team 10 RF frequency ratings from towers on a Del Mar rooftop that ranged from 20 percent to 150 percent.

Fountain said cell phone tower workers, roofers and painters could be put at risk if they don’t know where those towers are located. Many tower sites have these signs telling workers to stay at least three feet away from the antennas.

“Signs are dismissed by workers,” Fountain said. “This doesn’t even say anything,”

The law requires that the workers be made aware of these areas before they get near them. That’s not being done today.

Since 1985, the FCC has required workers be made aware of these dangers, but the law doesn’t specify how to alert them. The FCC gave notice of a proposed rule change two years ago for the cell companies and site owners to figure out the “how.” Fountain said the FCC tried to make things better for workers but the companies and owners have been slow to act.

“Cell phone providers are looking the other way and not protecting the little guy,” Fountain said.

Rivas claims that if you tell a manager or company about safety concerns, you are let go.

“What we’re told is to just go ahead and work. Get it done,” Rivas said.

The Solution

Fountain helped develop the only database of every wireless antenna system in the nation, so workers could be made aware of the danger before they get to a site. RF Check is working with the FCC to get it used across the entire industry. Workers would check the tower sites before any job.

“If they need to work in those areas they can request a power down through our protocol,” Fountain said.

Rivas believes it could have protected him.

“It would be a savior,” Rivas said.

Hazard, Risk & Safety – Understanding Risk Assessment, Management and Perception

health No Comments »

(subtitles available in English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Chinese and Russian, German, and a French version is available here: https://youtu.be/wRmfvFYDNr8)

Hazard, Risk & Safety
Danger, risques et sécurité
Gevaar, risico’s en veiligheid
Peligro, riesgo y seguridad
Опасность, риск и безопасность
Gefahr, Risiko und Sicherheit

We all hear these terms on a daily basis. So and so a chemical, physical or a biological agent poses a risk; This or that product is a hazard or behaving a certain way is unsafe.

A lot of the time “hazard” and “risk” are freely used to mean the same thing. However they are not.

Hazard is the potential to cause harm. Risk on the other hand is the likelihood of harm in defined circumstances.

In a nutshell, hazard and risk are not always aligned as the risk depends on the exposure to the hazard ; similarly, risk, safety and perception of risk are not always aligned; this can make political decisions regarding safety levels difficult to make, in these cases it is especially important to base them on facts rather than on subjective perceptions.

Best Insurance Company for Plan G Medicare Supplement

health No Comments »

https://www.abtinsuranceagency.com | (888) 465-9728.
Today I’m answering the question “What is the best insurance company for Plan G?”.This question, like many other Medicare or Medicare Supplement related questions doesn’t necessarily have a simple set answer. Really, the answer is – it depends.
If you’ve been shopping around, you probably know by now that Medigap Plans are standardized. This means that the benefits are regulated, so each and every Plan G, no matter what insurance company you get it from, will have the same exact benefits. And since any Plan G allows you to see any provider who accepts Medicare – there are no networks – you won’t have access to more or less providers depending upon which company you go with. The doctors and hospitals are the same. The benefits are literally identical. And just because one insurance company spends a ton of money on advertising and direct mailings to you doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best. Each and every company legally must pay on your medical claims the same, that is regulated by Medicare. So when answering the question “what is the best insurance company for Plan G” there are really two main things to look at:
1. Price. Different companies are going to charge you different prices for the same Plan G. Pricing can vary based on your area, so you want make sure you look at various insurance company’s prices so you can compare.
2. The second thing you want to take into consideration is the insurance company’s financial stability and rate increase history. Generally, you want a company that has at least a B or B + financial rating, and a company that has been around for a while. Additionally, it’s good to see a company that offers many different lines of coverage (like life insurance, dental/vision insurance, ect)- this is another signifier of their financial strength. A company with strong financial will be better able to keep rate increases mild over time.

Overall, there are several excellent insurance companies for Medicare Supplement Plan G when it comes to price, and rate stability. The best company for you will depend on your area, age and preference. If you have any questions, or would like a free no obligation quote for Plan G rates in your area, please feel free to give me a call! I’m happy to help. (888) 465-9728

The COSHH symbols and their meanings

health No Comments »

The COSHH symbols and their meanings

The GHS and CLP regulations use various symbols to identify the hazards that are posed by different chemicals, these are:

Explosive – which confirms the container holds a potentially unstable explosive

Flammable – which indicates that the container holds either a flammable liquid, gas, solid or an aerosol

Oxidising – which means the container holds either an oxidising gas, liquid or solid

Gas under pressure- which indicates the container holds compressed, liquefied, refrigerated liquefied or dissolved gas

Environmental Hazard – which means that the contents could be an acute or chronic hazard to the environment

Toxic – This warns that the contents are toxic when swallowed, breathed in or absorbed through the skin, this includes things like bleach or pesticides. Then there’s very toxic substances – which can cause significant harm or even death, even if just a small amount enters the body; this includes things such as hydrogen sulphide, chlorine and sodium cyanide.

Corrosive – which shows that the substance is both a physical hazard and a health hazard, which means it’s corrosive to metals and skin. Corrosive substances – such as bleaches and drain cleaners – can also cause serious burns and eye damage.

Health Hazard – which means the substance can irritate the eyes or cause skin irritation, inflammation or dermatitis

Serious Health Hazard – which indicates that the substance can be a breathing hazard or cause long-term health complications. Carcinogens, for example, can cause cancer. They can come from diesel exhaust fumes or benzene found in paint and rubber. They’re also found in chemicals like arsenic which can be used in pesticides and car batteries – they’re known as mutagens and can alter a person’s DNA!

Struggling to be me with chronic pain

This is a short film based on a synthesis of 77 qualitative studies exploring the experience of over a thousand adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain.

The script is drawn from peoples’ own words about what it is like to live with chronic pain and is performed by an actor.
